Whatever else happens, Manchester United can rely on one thing – the quality of Paul Scholes.

Saturday’s FA Cup derby against Manchester City saw Gary Neville sent off and fans anxious about what is happening in the boardroom.

But Scholes comes with his own guarantee, and the way he stole in to turn a Ryan Giggs centre to open the scoring set United on their way to a 4-2 victory.

It was Scholes’ 400th United appearance and with 10 goals for the season, Sven will be hoping he is in the scoring mood for England on Wednesday.

Even when United went a man short following Neville’s indiscretion, Scholes ensured they kept on passing the ball, retaining possession – and ended up scoring three more goals.

"He just ghosts into positions and is so difficult to pick up," said Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Scholes is having an inspired FA Cup this season, his double against Aston Villa in the third round saving United after they had fallen behind.

His Lion of the Weekend nomination has taken Scholes clear of Frank Lampard and Steve Gerrard in the battle to be named Lion of the Season.
