He took over the job from Emerson Leao in June 2001 but Brazil had a disappointing Copa America and only just managed to qualify for the World Cup Finals, finishing third in the South American table.

He was a "modest" defender with clubs like Caxias and Novo Hamburgo but became one of Brazil’s most successful club managers, winning the Copa Libertadores with both Gremio (1995) and Palmeiras (1999).

He has often been criticised for the aggressive style that his teams employ. He prefers his sides to play a defensive game and has been said to instruct his players to use any means possible to prevent the opposition from finding a rhythm.

As promised he resigned as Head Coach soon after Brazil’s World Cup success. He became National Coach of Portugal, the Euro 2004 hosts, in January 2003.

He says: "For me it is not enough to enjoy star status, regardless of whether you play for Real or Manchester United. If someone is not playing well or the way I like it, there are others ready to take his place".
