'Top class' Defoe

The FA's Director of Football Development managed Defoe at Upton Park last season and knows all about the talents that have persuaded Spurs to make their move.

"Jermain is a prolific goalscorer," says Trevor. "His instincts tell him get into the box, beat defenders to the ball, and score goals.

"There are areas of his game that he can look to progress, like his strength and movement across the line. Michael Owen's lateral movement, for example, is something he can look to replicate. It will make him even more of a worry to defenders.

"He's already shown that he can move his game forward. Previously he was predominately right-footed but he's worked hard on his left side and scored a few goals with his left foot already this season.

"He may not have pace like Thierry Henry but there's no doubt he's quick over the first couple of yards. He gets there first. And when he gets into goalscoring positions, he knows what to do. He is a top class finisher, a poacher."
