Trailing to Janocko's 35 yard free kick, Sven knew things had to change.

He brought off Danny Mills a few moments before half-time, thereby rejigging the midfield, dropping Phillip Neville into the right-back role and bringing Hargreaves in to strengthen the the side.

The difference between the first half and second half displays was huge, England playing with encouraging passion and verve and ultimately winning the match thanks to two goals from Michael Owen.

Sven explained what he did during the interval: "We talked at half-time and I said 'you must be calm; go and play, try to push a little more, try to be a little more organised against the counter-attack'. That's what they did.

"Sometimes you are lucky when you make changes. Other times, you are not. That's football.

"Tactically I didn't change the organisation, just changed a couple of players and they showed the spirit. That spirit comes if the players accept what we are doing and like that and like each other, and hopefully don't hate the managers and the coaches too much.

"It's about respect. It's a young team and it's amazing as it's so silent that when there's a team-talk, you can hear a fly buzzing around."

"I was very proud of them in the second half though. They showed how strong the spirit is.

The key to England's second half revival came not only from Sven's changes and Owen's clinical finishing, but also from Steven Gerrard's inspirational display in central midfield.

Sven could only praise the 23 year-old Liverpool star: "He's one of the best midfielders you can find. He's a complete player and you can put him wherever you want."

Sven's only trouble is that he now faces the kind of problem that all managers love to have - competition for places and with England, especially in the midfield.

Frank Lampard excelled alongside Gerrard in his first competitive match for England, and he along with Nicky Butt and Owen Hargreaves are now knocking on the manager's door for a place in the starting line-up.

"I have a beautiful problem in midfield. Lampard is an outstanding football player - he keeps the ball, is clever and has good passing. There's a thought behind everything he does and he did excellently.

"We were missing David Beckham and Nicky Butt, but another young man - Owen Hargreaves - also was incredible."
