David Seaman vs. Paul Robinson
Friday, 27 September 2002.
Match up of the weekend: Paul Robinson and David Seaman come face to face in club football as they compete for the England No.1 jersey...
Two generations who, between them, represent English goalkeeping past, present and future. Anyone who scores at Elland Road this season will definitely have earned it.
David Seaman turned 39 earlier this month and has been part of the international scene for a decade but is still going strong - witness his Champions League performance against PSV in midweek.
At 22, Paul Robinson is rated the best young No1 around and has displaced Nigel Martyn at Leeds this season and replaced him in the latest England squad. It's an FA.com match-up of the weekend.
PAUL ROBINSON (Goalkeeper, Leeds) v DAVID SEAMAN (Goalkeeper, Arsenal)
KNOWN FOR...
Robinson: A Leeds player from the age of 14, Club rivalry with Nigel Martyn, 11 caps for England under-21s
Seaman: Celebrity status dating from Euro 96 penalty-saves, flamboyant pony-tail, Ronaldinho
HIGH
Robinson: Picked by Terry Venables ahead of Nigel Martyn for every game this season
Seaman: Penalty saves in Euro 96 shoot-out against Spain put England into semi-finals
LOW
Robinson: Failed to play a single game for his club last season fuelling rumours he may leave Leeds
Seaman: Nayim's shot from the half-way line cost Arsenal defeat in the 1995 European Cup-Winners Cup Final
CURRENT FORM
Robinson: Currently showing why he is rated the best young goalkeeper in the country. Performed heroics in Leeds United's 2-0 victory at Newcastle and again in the 1-0 home win against Manchester United. Conceded only five goals in eight games; including four clean sheets
Seaman: Considered unlucky by manager Arsene Wenger to be caught out by a freak Gareth Farrelly goal at Highbury which had echoes of Ronaldinho last Saturday. But he bounced back in Eindhoven on Wednesday with two saves from PSV striker Kezman at a critical time in the match helping Arsenal go onto win 4-0.
WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THEMSELVES
Robinson: "I've been at Leeds since I was 14. I've supported them as a boy and it's just been a dream come true playing for them."
Seaman: "The day I retire from England is the day I retire from the game altogether."
HISTORY
Robinson: Brought up a Leeds fan, the unknown Robinson got his chance earlier than expected - replacing the injured Nigel Martyn as a teenager during 1998/99, helping Leeds finish fourth in David O'Leary's first season. However, Martyn's consistency meant Robinson went back to the bench at Leeds apart from a period in 2000/01 when he performed sensationally, most notably against Barcelona in the Champions League.
Always in the England picture despite not being club No1, he has played 11 times for the under-21s - including last summer's European Championship - and was named by Peter Taylor in the England squad which faced Italy in 2000. Been promoted to first choice this season by Terry Venables and named in Sven's squad against Portugal earlier this month.
Seaman: Released by Leeds United, and part of the Birmingham City side that were beaten in the FA Cup by Altrincham, Seaman has made a success of himself the hard way. Impressed at QPR and persuaded George Graham to sign him for Arsenal before the 1990/91 season.
Won the title in his first season at Highbury with the club losing just one game and has since gone onto win the Double twice and the European Cup-Winners Cup. Now the last remaining survivor of Arsenal's legendary 'back five' his international career has included Euro 96 when he became a national hero and two World Cups, although the last ended in disaster when he was deceived by the flight of Ronaldinho's free-kick against Brazil.
Written off more times than any other English player particularly when suffering his shoulder injury last term, David Seaman is still number one in the eyes of Arsene Wenger, who showed his confidence by selling successor Richard Wright to Everton in the close-season.
COMPARISON
"He is an excellent goalkeeper, he can deal with shots from close-in, shots from distance and very good crosses" Terry Venables on Paul Robinson
"He has always come back strong and determined whenever he has had a blow," Arsene Wenger on David Seaman
