Mixed fortunes for England stars and promising signs from young hopefuls...
England are blessed with several excellent young central defenders and ANTHONY GARDNER added a new element to his game on Sunday - a goal.
The 6ft 3ins tower, a member of England's under-21 side last season, popped up to score Tottenham's late winner in a 3-2 success against West Ham, for whom TREVOR SINCLAIR appeared on the scoresheet.
"He has talent, pace, height and strength. Who knows where he can end up provided he can improve his concentration. He just needs more experience," said delighted manager Glenn Hoddle.
Already there are comparisons between Gardner, whose goal was the first of his career, and Sol Campbell who became an England regular while at White Hart Lane.
EMILE HESKEY flies to Spain with his Liverpool team-mates on Monday as the toast of Anfield. Although Czech striker Milan Baros grabbed the headlines with his double at Bolton in place of MICHAEL OWEN, it was Heskey whose last-minute winner gave The Reds a 3-2 victory at The Reebok.
He is in strong contention to start in Liverpool's opening Champions League fixture against Valencia on Tuesday night and so is DANNY MURPHY, who set up Heskey for his goal on Saturday and whose shoulder injury is responding well to injury.
Arsenal's English contingent DAVID SEAMAN, ASHLEY COLE, MARTIN KEOWN and SOL CAMPBELL were rarely troubled at the back by Charlton as The Gunners won 3-0 - their 27th unbeaten Premiership game in a row.
That is a club record and Nottingham Forest's all-time record of 42 set during the Brian Clough era is now under threat. Now they will try and take that form into the Champions League, where they have kept only five clean sheets in 38 previous games.
It wasn't good for Manchester United's galaxy of stars at Elland Road. RIO FERDINAND impressed as he went through the ordeal of being jeered by the Leeds fans who used to love him but he was helpless to stop Harry Kewell's winner.
DAVID BECKHAM continued in the role of Manchester United captain in Roy Keane's absence but he and the rest of the Old Trafford team were denied a goal by outstanding young goalkeeper PAUL ROBINSON - who is keeping NIGEL MARTYN out of the Leeds team and was named in the last England squad.
Leeds United are third and further good news is that striker ROBBIE FOWLER could be back at the start of next month after a hip operation, with manager Terry Venables confirming: "He's on the mend."
GARY NEVILLE should be back even sooner for Manchester United.

Away from the Premier League it was a fantastic league debut for England Under 19 striker, WAYNE ROUTLEDGE. The Crystal Palace striker cracked home the within a minute of the kick-off in his side's 4-2 win over Wolves at Selhurst Park.
