Sammy Lee, Liverpool First team and England Under-21 coach, is to join the England Senior team coaching staff, The Football Association announced this morning.
Lee will continue to work full-time with Liverpool, but will team up for all Senior England fixtures to work with Sven Goran Eriksson and his coaching staff of Tord Grip, Peter Taylor and Dave Sexton.
"It is a great honour for me personally and for Liverpool Football Club," said Lee, who won 14 caps forEngland. "I have always been thrilled to be involved with the Under-21 set-up and to progress to the Senior coaching staff is fantastic news.
"I hope to continue the excellent working relationship with the players that's already been established by Sven, Tord, Peter and Dave. I think credit should also be given to the work of Steve McClaren during his time with the team and I hope I can continue where he left off."
"It's great news that Sammy is joining the Seniors' coaching staff," said England coach Sven Goran Eriksson. "He has great experience through his time with the England Under-21s and also with Liverpool, with whom he has just enjoyed incredible success.
"I have spoken to Sammy on several occasions recently and know that he has an excellent working relationship with Peter and Dave already [all three worked together with the Under-21s]. I know he will bring more vital components to our team and I am very much looking forward to working with him."
Wilkinson, F.A. Technical Director and current Under-21 coach, paid tribute to Lee, saying: "I'd like to thank Sammy for his tremendous efforts with the Under-21s. He's been an inspiration to a number of players who have moved up to the Senior side from the Under-21s, and he has truly earned the recognition of his ability and talent."
Adam Crozier, F.A. Chief Executive, concluded: "This is great news for English football. Sammy Lee is highly regarded throughout the game and has a great working knowledge of the England players through his experience with Liverpool and the Under-21s.
