Kevin Keegan's 20-month reign as England coach has come to a dramatic end, as he announced his resignation following this defeat against Germany in the last match at the old Wembley. It wasn't quite what people had in mind for the post-match fireworks. An emotional Keegan said: "Absolutely no-one is to blame but myself. I did this job to the best of my ability but the truth is that Kevin Keegan is a little bit short for this job."
If Michael Owen, who had a frustrating afternoon, had shown better control when David Beckham's chip gave him an opportunity to race clear of the German defence, Keegan might have secured the draw that would have saved him. But the gamble of playing Gareth Southgate in midfield was a disaster and the Germans ran the show. Germany's Hamann scored with a set-piece goal on 14 minutes that won the match and has given England the worst possible start to their qualifying campaign, leaving them pointless, and manager-less.
