Our campaign has been gathering steam. We’ve heard from Shearer and Barnes – now we want to hear from you

John Barnes, v Brazil

Friendly, 10.06.84

My favourite England goal has to be John Barnes’ amazing solo effort in the Maracana. It’s simply due to the fact that he was an Englishman scoring a Brazilian-style goal. And it was in the Maracana! The fact it was a friendly means it doesn’t have the historical impact it deserved but I could watch that goal again and again. The way he drifted past men was brilliant.

Alan Shearer v Scotland
1996 European Championship, 15.09.96

The context made it crucial - we had drawn our first match and it was 0-0 when Neville crossed for Shearer to head joyfully in at the far post. The slick build-up meant that you could see it coming.

Paul Gascoigne, v Scotland
European Championship, 15.06.96

I was sat right behind the goal. Despair one minute when the penalty was given, ecstasy when McAllister missed and further ecstasy when Gazza scored. Best day out ever at Wembley with all the Jocks in skirts and full Braveheart regalia. It became very apparent there were two sets of Scottish fans there that day! One lot disappeared and left Rangers swapping badges with us. Excellent policing that day too. How often do you hear that?

David Beckham v Greece
2002 World Cup Qualifier, 06.10.01

It said so much about the man to be able to withstand that pressure. It wasn't just any old free-kick, it was the whole nation resting on his shoulders, and it was down to the last minute. Simply amazing.

Bryan Robson, v France
World Cup, 16.06.82

My favourite England goal comes from the 1982 World Cup and it’s our quickest in the competition. It was a very simple move that we had been practising the same way in training right up until the day before the game. Kenny Samson was our long throw expert and always took them, but someone suggested in the final training session that Steve Coppell could do it just as well. So on the day it was Stevie’s throw that worked a treat in setting that goal up. Also, there’s some great technique from Robson when he actually scores the goal, and typically from him, he went in where it hurts. It was just very satisfying to see a training ground routine come off so perfectly and it was against a very, very good French side.
