Prior to Walter Winterbottom’s appointment in 1946 there was no 'England Manager' and the England team was chosen by The FA’s International Selection Committee.

The Committee would bring in various trainers from the top clubs to work with the team on a match-to-match basis - Arsenal’s Tom Whittaker was one of those.

Despite the arrival of Walter Winterbottom as England manager, the International Selection Committee continued to pick the team, although his advice on selection was sought.

Alf Ramsey was the first man to have full control over the England side.
