Eriksson's first game in charge was the 3-0 victory against Spain at Villa Park in a friendly international on 28 February 2001. Four subsequent wins in consecutive games ensured that Eriksson achieved the most successful start of any England coach.

Admired and respected by fellow managers, players and fans, Eriksson is known for his astute tactical awareness and his calm, reassuring style.

Under Eriksson, England qualified for the World Cup in one of the most dramatic campaigns in the Three Lions' history. Having reached the quarter-finals in the Far East, Sven's men then qualified for Euro 2004 without losing a game.

They went on to the quarter-finals of the European Championship, but eventually lost out to hosts Portugal on penalties after an epic encounter in Lisbon.

Qualifying for the World Cup Finals in Germany got under way with a 2-2 draw in Austria, followed by victory in Poland. England won their next five qualifiers before losing in Belfast to Northern Ireland.

Qualification was assured by victory over Austria at Old Trafford and England rounded off 2005 with an amazing 3-2 friendly win over Argentina.

England's second World Cup journey under Sven ended with a heart-breaking defeat on penalties in the quarter-finals after a 0-0 draw.

Prior to the tournament, on Monday 23 January 2006 it was announced that Sven would be leaving his role as England Head Coach after the World Cup.

Sven was born in Torsby on 5 February 1948
