Playing Career Dave is one of the most respected football coaches and managers of the last 30 years and The FA is still delighted to be able to call upon his unrivalled knowledge and experience.
A Londoner, he was a professional player throughout the 1950s, serving Luton Town, West Ham United, Leyton Orient, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace as a goalscoring inside-forward.
He scored 69 goals in 163 League matches and helped Brighton to promotion from the Third Division (South) to the Second Division.
Managerial/Coaching Career He was on the coaching staff at
Chelsea before Leyton Orient gave him his first managerial position in 1965. He went on to hold posts at several big clubs, including coach at Arsenal and manager at Chelsea, Queens Park Rangers, Manchester United and Coventry City.
He guided Chelsea to victory in the 1970 FA Cup Final and took
QPR to within a whisker of the League Championship in 1976. He succeeded the controversial Tommy Docherty at Old Trafford and took United to another FA Cup Final in 1979.
He was so admired by The FA that he was appointed manager of the England Under-21 team - they won the UEFA Championship twice with Dave in charge - and the first Technical Director of The FA National School at Lilleshall in 1984.
