Introduction

Ray has been England's Senior Goalkeeping Coach since 1996, following a glittering career as a player in which he collected just about every honour in the game.

Playing Career

A typical Shankly signing, he was picked up from Scunthorpe United for a mere £18,000 in 1967. He broke into Liverpool's first team three years later and was immovable for the next ten seasons. After 656 matches for the Merseyside giants he signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 1981.

At Anfield he had won three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, five League Championships, one FA Cup and one League Cup. He played in no fewer than five FA Cup Finals - three for Liverpool and two for Tottenham.

Coaching Career

He held several coaching positions at Spurs after retiring as a player and was then appointed manager at Barnet. In 1996, after two years with the Third Division club, former club-mate Glenn Hoddle asked him to join the England set-up.

Ray is The FA's Head of National Teams. His role involves overseeing the U16 to U20 age groups and monitoring the development and progression of players through these levels, as well as liaison for players capable of making the transition through to the U21 squad.

In addition, Ray heads up national goalkeeper training and development, and is a key member of the senior England team staff in his role as Goalkeeping Coach.

Now England goalkeepers at all levels have benefited from the expertise of a former player who won 61 caps at senior level from 1972 to 1983.
