Introduction

Sammy is assistant manager with Bolton Wanderers and, until August 2006, combined the role with his position as Coach for England's senior team.

Playing Career

Sammy, 45, was an England international as a player, winning 14 caps as a midfielder in the early 1980s. He scored on his debut against Greece in a European Championship qualifier in 1982.

Liverpool-born, he came to Anfield as a 16-year-old midfielder and made a scoring debut against Leicester City three years later. Always popular with the fans, he was devoted to Liverpool and as passionate about the club as any player who has worn the red shirt.

Sammy went on to make almost 200 League appearances and won two European Cups, three League Championships and four League Cups.

He later played for QPR, Real Osasuna (Spain), Southampton and Bolton.

Coaching Career

Sammy began his coaching career by taking charge of Liverpool’s reserve team, initially under Roy Evans. After Gerard Houllier had been appointed sole manager at the end of 1998, the reserves put together a late run that almost snatched the Pontins League title.

Sammy was promoted to share both First and Reserve Team duties with Jacques Crevoisier.

In the summer of 1999 he was linked with a move to Sheffield United but decided to concentrate on furthering his coaching credentials at Anfield.

Regarded as one of the most talented coaches in the English game, Sammy was a regular member of the coaching staff with the England Under-21 side before moving on to become a regular member of the Senior Team’s coaching set-up under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

June 2005 saw Sammy take a step back into the Premiership as assistant manager to Sam Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers.

Sammy ended his involvement with the England Senior Team in August 2006.
