Winger praises his Liverpool and England team-mate.
Stewart Downing expects his Liverpool team-mate and captain Steven Gerrard to carry his inspirational club form on to the international stage.
The midfielder lifted the League Cup on Sunday and has returned to the Liverpool team, following injury, with his usual energy and verve.
Gerrard will be a candidate for the captaincy on Wednesday night against Holland and he has Downing's full backing.
"That's the manager's decision but Steven has captained Liverpool for many years and done it very well," said Downing.
"If he is picked for England I am sure he would do it well. He is a big influence for Liverpool and England he drives teams on and if he's given it then it will be great."
Downing is also relishing the opportunity to impress manager Stuart Pearce in the few remaing games before Euro 2012.
"We have a big tournament in the summer and there aren't many games before that so it's a good test against a good side," he said. "It's a big game and a big test but we hope to get a result.
"Every time a new manager comes in it's a fresh start for everyone especially those that weren't in the squad before, it's a chance for them.
"It's a challenge to impress a new manager and I love challenges in football."
