England striker Darren Bent spoke of the importance of his side’s early goals in Cardiff, as the Three Lions picked up a deserved and needed three points to re-ignite their European Championship qualifying campaign.
A Frank Lampard penalty and a typically clinical finish from Bent himself in the first 15 minutes set Fabio Capello’s team on their way to victory and they never really looked like surrendering their advantage from then on.
With a feisty and passionate Welsh crowd packed into the Millennium Stadium, it was always going to be difficult to try and quieten them down but Bent believes the quickfire goals did exactly that dashed any hopes the Welsh team may have had.
“The early goal settled the team down because these international derbies can be quite difficult,” he told FATV after the game.
“There was such a hostile atmosphere and it was fantastic atmosphere to play in, so to score two in the first 15 minutes settled us down and helped us to control the game after that.
“It would have been nice to have got more goals in the second half but credit goes to Wales because they gave it a go and made it difficult for us.
“It was a much needed three points today, so we control the group now and we can hopefully push on and qualify for the Euros.”
