Ashley Cole is now England’s most-capped full-back.

England won in Denmark for the first time for 33 years last night. Ron Greenwood’s team were the last to manage it – in a European Championship qualifier in 1978.

England won 4-3 before 48,000 fans in Copenhagen’s Idraetspark with this team: Ray Clemence, Phil Neal, Mick Mills, Ray Wilkins, Dave Watson, Emlyn Hughes (captain), Kevin Keegan, Steve Coppell, Bob Latchford, Trevor Brooking and Peter Barnes. England’s scorers were Keegan (two), Latchford and Neal.

Ashley Cole, England’s Player of the Year for 2010, made his 87th appearance last night to become England’s most-capped full-back in history. He is now one ahead of Kenny Sansom and two ahead of Gary Neville. Cole made his debut in Sven-Goran Eriksson’s third match in charge, a World Cup qualifier in Albania on 28 March 2001.

Sansom won his caps from 1979 to 1988 and Neville won his from 1995 to 2007.

Cole wore the captain’s armband for most of the second half last night. Frank Lampard, substituted at half-time, had started the match as England’s 46th post-war captain.

The previous skippers were Hardwick, Swift, Wright B, Ramsey, Clayton, Haynes, Armfield, Moore, Flowers, Charlton B, Mullery, Peters, Bell, Hughes, Ball, Francis G, Keegan, Channon, Mills, Thompson, Cherry, Watson, Clemence, Shilton, Neal, Wilkins, Robson, Butcher, Beardsley, Lineker, Wright M, Pearce, Platt, Ince, Adams, Shearer, Seaman, Campbell, Keown, Beckham, Owen, Gerrard, Terry, Ferdinand and Rooney.
