Steven Gerrard has promised supporters that the England players will do everything they can to bounce back from the disappointment of the World Cup - starting against Hungary on Wednesday.
The Liverpool midfielder will continue as captain at Wembley in Rio Ferdinand's absence and has echoed manager Fabio Capello's apology to the England fans who travelled to South Africa.
The players are still hurting as they reflect on their last 16 exit at the World Cup and Gerrard believes the work must start now to rebuild the country's confidence in the side.
He said: "At the moment I'm hurting as a player and I'm sure the rest of the lads are. We want to slowly build the belief of the supporters because it's not nice at the moment.
"We have to share the blame for what happened and take it on the chin together. We let the fans down over the summer and hopefully down the line, after a few wins, things will look a bit more rosy.
"Every time I have played for England there has always been a big responsibility.
"Hopefully the young lads can freshen up the squad and we can produce a positive result and performance. We have to show how sorry we are with our performances on the pitch.
"Fabio is the manager so all the players are going to listen carefully to what he has got to say.
"It obviously didn't work out for us at the World Cup so we need to listen to the man with the experience. I have got big faith in this manager, it would be very stupid and naïve to not have that confidence."
