Capello Factor enticed Carragher

Wednesday, 19 May, 2010

Jamie Carragher is hoping to impress Manager Fabio Capello.

Jamie Carragher admits the opportunity to work with Fabio Capello was a major factor in his decision to come out of international retirement.

The Liverpool centre-back had seemingly brought down the curtain on his England career in 2007, but was convinced to reverse his decision by the Italian and was named in the Three Lions' 30-man training squad for the World Cup.

And the 32-year-old says he was desperate to work with Capello having followed the Italian's illustrious career at AC Milan, Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid.

"The chance to work with Mr Capello was important in my decision to return to international football," said Carragher.

"He has been one of the best managers in football over the last ten or 15 years. I'm a big follower of football and I was always asking Steve (Gerrard) what it was like when he came back from international duty, asking what the manager was like.

"So the manager was a massive reason behind my decision."

And Carragher admits he is fully focussed on using his time at England's training camp in Austria to prove to Capello that he is worth a place in the 23-man squad that will travel to South Africa.

He added: "Hopefully over the next two weeks I can impress him both on and off the pitch, and then hopefully I can get into that squad.

"As a youngster, playing for England is what you want to do, so the chance to try and get into the final squad was one I couldn't turn down."
