England duo Stewart Downing and Wayne Rooney help their sides to Premier League wins

England winger Stewart Downing hailed a “perfect” display as Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 win against Wigan Athletic.

Downing, who opened the scoring with a header before Uruguay star Luis Suarez grabbed a hat-trick, said: "We've had some big wins of late and great attacking play. We're defending well as a team.

"I thought that was the perfect performance again, like Swansea - that was a big win and a big performance. It's coming together quite well and we just need to keep progressing."

The former Middlesbrough man’s colleague Glen Johnson set up Suarez for his third strike, while substitute Jordan Henderson saw a late header cleared off the line.

There was less good news for another Merseyside-based England defender as Phil Jagielka limped out of Everton’s 3-1 win against Reading.

Goals from Marouane Fellaini, Steven Pienaar and Kevin Mirallas clinched the win for the Toffees but manager David Moyes was left disappointed after Jagielka suffered an ankle injury following a challenge with Adam Le Fondre.

Moyes said: "I'm disappointed because Jags is such a good player. It's a bad one. He'll have surgery tonight to stitch it up. I've genuinely not seen the challenge again. At the time I thought it was poor. Maybe if I see it again I will think differently."

And Three Lions ace Wayne Rooney was at his best as Manchester United brushed aside Norwich City 4-0 at Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old set up Japan international Shinji Kagawa for the second and third goals of his hat-trick, before sealing the win with a spectacular long-range effort in the final minute.

Meanwhile, Jay Bothroyd marked his first Premier League start of the season with a crucial winning goal as QPR secured only their third victory of the season.

The rock-bottom club were locked at 1-1 with Southampton at St. Mary’s but, with 13 minutes left on the clock, Bothroyd converted Park Ji-Sung’s cross to notch his first goal in the Premier League since November 2011.

But the 30-year-old, who has one cap for the Three Lions, had a fellow England international to thank for ensuring his strike won the game.

Goalkeeper Rob Green, who came on for the injured Julio Cesar 15 minutes from time, pulled off a miraculous save to deny Maya Yoshida heading a Southampton equaliser late on.
