Frank Lampard closes in on Bobby Tambling's Chelsea goalscoring record

Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez has backed England star Frank Lampard to break the club’s all-time goalscoring record after the midfielder netted during the 4-1 win against Wigan Athletic.

Lampard’s second half strike took him to 198 goals for the Blues, leaving him just four behind Bobby Tambling. Ramires, Eden Hazard and Marko Marin were also on the scoresheet for the European champions.

Benitez said: “In the last two months he's scored eight or nine goals. I'm the manager and I try to improve my players. When Lampard's fit his understanding of the game is fine. He can score goals, so if he breaks the record I'll be really pleased.”

Ashley Cole had pride of place on the front of the Chelsea matchday programme after collecting his 100th England cap in midweek against Brazil and, as usual, the left-back didn't disappoint against Wigan.

Cole regularly bombed up and down the left-flank at Stamford Bridge, reliable in the back-four and dangerous as part of the Blues' offence. Fellow Three Lions defender Gary Cahill also featured.

Jack Wilshere was in fine form once again as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 win at Sunderland.

The youngster was at his typically industrious best and played a part in the only goal of the game, which was scored by Santi Cazorla and assisted by Three Lions ace Theo Walcott.

Wilshere limped off after the interval with a thigh injury, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger insists the problem is not serious.

He said: “It's not long term and he should be fine in few days.”

England defender Carl Jenkinson was dismissed midway through the second half after collecting two yellow cards.

At White Hart Lane, Kyle Walker, Steven Caulker and Scott Parker turned in strong performances to help Spurs record a 2-1 win against Newcastle. Wales international Gareth Bale grabbed both goals for the north London side.

And England No.1 Joe Hart endured an evening to forget as Manchester City slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Southampton.

Hart, whose international colleagues Joleon Lescott, James Milner and Gareth Barry also featured, fumbled a Rickie Lambert shot into the path of Steven Davis, who scored Southampton’s second goal.

Barry turned the ball into his own net to effectively seal the win for Southampton, who triumphed for the first time under new manager Mauricio Pochettino.
