Sir Trevor Brooking and Bobby Moore's family lay commemorative wreath at Wembley

Sir Trevor Brooking was joined by Tina and Roberta Moore at Wembley to lay a wreath commemorating the death of England legend Bobby Moore.

Sunday is the 20th anniversary of the former defender’s passing and Brooking and The FA invited Moore’s former wife and daughter to the event.

A special flower wreath, depicting the World Cup winning captain’s famous red England ‘6’ shirt, was placed at the Bobby Moore statue at Wembley.

FATV were there too and Roberta explained how she felt being able to play a part in remembering her father’s passing.

She said: “It’s been a wonderful day and I’m very grateful to The FA for asking me to come along and do it with Sir Trevor.

“It was a really special moment, I was just reading the inscription and then saw everyone here, taking photographs and admiring it.

“It was a lovely thing to do and it felt very poignant and touching.”

And Roberta also spoke of how it was for her growing up with such an iconic figure as Moore as her father.

She explained: “Everyone knows him as this remarkable footballer, but to me, he was just my dad.

“And he was a lovely dad. We were really close, he was great fun and was very supportive.

“I knew I was in trouble if dad came up because as he was calm on the pitch, he was quite calm at home too.

“So I knew I was in trouble if he came up to give me a ticking off, not that I was in trouble a lot!

“But he was a lovely dad and was a very kind and gentle man.”

Brooking added: “It was great for Roberta and Tina to lay the wreath there and it’s pretty amazing that it’s been 20 years.

“He died at 51, which is such a young age and out of all the ’66 squad members, he was the first to go for quite a long time.

“Even now when we’re looking back from The FA’s point of view with the 150th anniversary, the name of that squad and the captain, Bobby Moore, gets even more profile because we haven’t won anything since.

“When we did win the World Cup, I was a teenager and you just assumed that was the first of a few more titles going forward.

“Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened and had Bobby been alive now, I’m sure we would all have been asking him the question about why we haven’t won since he lifted that trophy."

The Bobby Moore Fund benefited from a direct association with The FA England Awards at St. George’s Park earlier this month while The FA donated £25,000 to the Bobby Moore Fund, which was then matched by the England players through the England Footballers Foundation.
