England captain says he plans to take coaching qualifications

Steven Gerrard says that coaching and management is something that interests him, but only once he hangs up his international boots up.

The Liverpool midfielder won his 100th cap for England in Sweden earlier this week and has no intentions of giving up on his international dreams.

And he intends to take his coaching badges when the opportunity arises to see whether it’s a career he can pursue.

He said: “I’m going to go into my coaching badges after my England days are over and when I’ve got the time.

“When the international breaks are on, I’ll go and do my coaching badges and we’ll see where it goes.”

But the 32-year-old believes he can’t expect a career in the dugout purely because of his achievements as a player.

And if he feels that coaching isn’t something he’s comfortable with, then Gerrard admits he won’t have any problem with leaving that option alone.

“I’ve always said I’ll only become a coach or a manager if I’m good enough,” he explained.

“I don’t think you go down that road because you’ve been a decent player. That’s a mistake that a lot of footballers have made.

“Only go down that road if you’re good enough. You have to try it, get your badges first and make sure you’re comfortable and have your own belief in your own knowledge of the game.”
