Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has selected his England Player of 2012

For any youngster making his way in the game, it is important to have a more experienced player to learn from.

At Arsenal, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could head to Gunners skipper Thomas Vermaelen, Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky or German international duo Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker.

And when he is on international duty, ‘The Ox’ is spoilt for choice with Wayne Rooney, Frank LampardAshley Cole and Jermain Defoe having all earned more than 50 caps.

But it is our latest centurion, Steven Gerrard, who Oxlade-Chamberlain looks up to the most and he has subsequently selected the captain as his England Player of the Year.

He told FATV: “[Gerrard is] a great asset to the squad.

“He gives you advice, he helps you out and it gives you confidence just having someone like that around.

“He’s been brilliant for me.”

Steven Gerrard, along with Ashley Cole, Joe Hart, Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck are all in the hunt this year and it's up to you which star will claim the 2012 England Player of the Year award at the inaugural FA England Awards in association with Vauxhall at St. George's Park on Sunday 3 February 2013.

Place your vote in the poll below before the closing date of 13 January 2013. You can also vote for the England Men's Under-21s and Women's Senior Players of the Year, too.
