Phil Jagielka backs England and Everton team-mate Leighton Baines

Phil Jagielka feels his Everton club-mate Leighton Baines has given Roy Hodgson a real selection dilemma.

The left-back was one of England's star performers in Friday's 5-0 victory over San Marino at Wembley, but with 98-cap Ashley Cole also in the squad, he faces competition to play in Tuesday's match with Poland.

And Jagielka believes Baines is every bit as good as the Chelsea defender following his form at Goodison Park this season.

He said: "I don't see there's any difference really. Ashley has performed at that level for a long time now and put himself up there as one of the world's top left-backs.

"But if you watch Bainesy enough, and he won't thank me for saying it, he's been by far our best player all season."

It's not just for his defensive work either, as the former Wigan Athletic man has shown his prowess going forward and played a key role in England's attacking play on Friday.

Jagielka added: "A lot of the strikers take the plaudits but it's hard for a full-back to create as many chances as he has, more like a winger or a number ten. He's been amazing.

"It is a test to see if he can stay at those levels and if he gets to stay in the team and keep performing as well as he has done, and possibly keep Ash out of the team."
