Gareth Barry will miss Euro 2012 because of a lower abdomen tear

England and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry has been ruled out of this summer’s European Championship.

Barry had a scan earlier today [Monday 28 May] which confirmed that he has a tear to the muscle in his lower abdomen.

England Manager Roy Hodgson has called up Everton’s Phil Jagielka to replace Barry.

Hodgson said: “I’m very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years.

"I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I’m sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Hodgson’s England squad of 23 meet up at the team hotel tomorrow [Tuesday 29 May] lunchtime to resume training following the 1-0 victory in Norway.

The deadline for submitting England’s Euro 2012 squad to UEFA is at 11am BST tomorrow.

What Do You Think?

  • Why are we supporting Euro football 2012 in Poland? Having just seen the BBC Panomra programme that shared several different examples of racism. Why are we particapating? Thank you for sharing your point of viewWBy Poll (11 months ago)
  • It's great that Jags has been called up, but he should of been called up for the Euro squad in the first place!! But I hope Barry a quick recovery, because he is a top class player.By Andy17efc (11 months ago)
