Jaw injury sees Chelsea man withdraw from squad as Martin Kelly comes in


Gary Cahill has been withdrawn from England’s Euro 2012 squad following the injury he suffered in the match against Belgium.

The Chelsea defender has two fractures of his jaw, one either side. The England medical team have been in close contact overnight with Cahill’s club doctors who will treat him moving forward.

Liverpool defender Martin Kelly will be called into the squad – subject to agreement from UEFA’s medical team. Kelly trained with the England players last week and was part of the group that travelled to Norway.

John Terry has been scanned this morning and given the all clear. He will be re-assessed on Tuesday when the team regroup.

  • i am no manu lover but the rio decision is sending the fa on the rocky road..same as liverpool defending suarez this is exactly the same thing..terry is innocent until proven guilty but then why is rio being punished,,,when the premier league allowed chelsea to duck the handshakes with qpr also they became party to the cover up or sucking up to the terry camp...there are absolutely no football reasons why he was not chosen in the first place...first he was england captain then he wasnt thru no fault of his own..give the lad a break..martin kelly..give us a break By malachas (11 months ago)
  • What a complete selection shambles. With the squad so heavily populated with last season's underperforming Liverpool players, I can't see us getting though the group stages. In fact I don't think we will win a match. It seems that Hodgson is doing his best to live up to the "you don't know what you are doing" maxim. The FA must be wondering whether they have yet again backed another "loser". The treatment of Rio Ferdinand is absolutely disgraceful & compounds my lack of confidence in the current manager. The team's dour performances in the 2 games since his appointment definitely do not inspire me with any confidence at all, which has worsened by the loss of ket experienced players. Dinosaur & "old hat" spring to mind with the 4-4-2 system. Would have been better to have stuck with Pearce until after the tournament.By Steveisamured (11 months ago)
  • Martin kelly is a good defender however, i dont think hes ready to paly at the euro so i think Rio and Richards should be in the squad, me personally, i believe Roy left Rio out of the squad because of the Terry and Anton situation. By Peter (11 months ago)
