Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says resting Jack Wilshere was precautionary measure

Arsene Wenger insists he is not worried about Jack Wilshere’s long-term fitness.

The Arsenal midfielder did not feature in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Aston Villa due to inflammation in the ankle which kept him out of action for over a year.

But Gunners boss Wenger says resting Wilshere at the weekend was simply a precautionary measure.

Wenger said: "He had a little bit of inflammation of scar tissue [in the ankle] but it's nothing. It's very minor.

"The rest will help him get rid of it. Apart from that, he has done very well.

"He has not played for 17 months. People forget what that means. Seventeen months in a career is massive.

"But I'm very happy with the way he is progressing."
