Phil Jones’s arrival on the international scene has been extraordinary. The 19-year-old moved from Blackburn Rovers to Manchester United in the summer of 2011, and he has established himself as a key member of the team.

The defender won his first cap inthe 2-2 draw against Montenegro which secured England’s passage to Euro 2012. Jones put in a strong display as he played the full 90 minutes at right-back.

He then featured in victorious friendlies at Wembley against Spain and Sweden, and won plaudits for his assured performances in central midfield against the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets.

Jones’s rapid development raises a strong case for him to be included in Fabio Capello’s squad for Poland and Ukraine. His strong physique and ability to get forward have made him indispensable for United.

Jones has played at centre-back, right-back and in midfield this season, and his versatility could be key next summer.
