The versatility of James Milner has proved to be a very worthy asset, being able to play on either flank, defensively as well as illustrating his innovation going forward.

Launching the year with England by starting against Denmark on the left, his immense work ethic earned the player many plaudits, although he would only feature as a substitute in the home nation’s derby against Wales a month later.

Manchester City’s £24 million pound signing would further show his ability is more than adequate with starting performances against Ghana, Switzerland and Wales before playing Spain in the showpiece friendly at Wembley.

England went on to win the game 1-0, and highlight the importance of having James Milner in the team.

Four minutes after half time, Milner whipped in a free-kick that proved to be assailable, as Darren Bent’s header hit the post and Frank Lampard tapped in the rebound.

Milner, himself, is still looking to open his international goal tally.
