Jack Wilshere has established himself as one of the first names on Fabio Capello’s team sheet after a breakthrough year on the international stage.
The midfielder started England’s first four games of 2011, making his full international debut in
a 2-1 victory over Denmark. His confident display in Copenhagen was praised by Capello, who then handed the teenager his first competitive start in
a Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.
After back-to-back starts against Wales and Ghana, Wilshere gave his best performance in an England shirt
against Switzerland at Wembley. The midfielder surged forward to win a penalty, which was converted by Frank Lampard to spark England’s comeback from two goals down to secure a point.
Wilshere almost created a winner for the Three Lions when he picked up the ball deep in his own half and beat three players before he slid a through-ball through to Darren Bent, who failed to convert the chance to put England ahead.
An injury sustained in that game has curtailed Wilshere’s season so far and he has not been available for club or country, but if fit in time he could be back in the squad for Poland and Ukraine.
