  • Wayne Rooney in action against Switzerland.

FA confirm it will appeal Wayne Rooney sanction.

The FA can confirm it will be appealing the UEFA sanction against Wayne Rooney following his red card against Montenegro.

The written reasons were received on Tuesday evening with a deadline of midnight tonight (Friday 4 November) to respond, which we have now done so formally.

What Do You Think?

  • Football is a physical sport and worse things happen accidentally and deliberately than Roonie's petulant lash out. But he has a history of letting the red mist take over his talent. Not good enough I'm afraid. And whether the other player made a meal of the kick or not is immaterial. If Roonie was a bloke who carried on like this down the pub every week he'd have an ASBO at least. As a director of a football programme for talented under-privileged youths, we try to teach the kids some of the old values, play hard, but play fair, control the temper and keep out cynical attitudes. If Roonie had learned some of those growing up, he might not be facing the prospect of missing the competition now. 3 match ban, well he's had it coming over the years and don't blame UEFA for making him miss the group stages. Perhaps Roonie should have had that in his mind when he lashed out for no reason other than his own immaturity.By Breakthrough football (18 months ago)
  • I believe Rooney is arogant and unpatriotic. My reasoning for this is that he never sings the national anthem of OUR nation and he has now let us down and may have cost us progression from the group stages. He hasn't even apologised to the public for this. Disgrace.By Kai (18 months ago)
  • Maybe what really needs to be taken into account here is the Montenegrin player did over emphasise the power behind the kick, wincing in pain. Fair enough Rooney lashed out in frustration however if this incident happened in the English premiership I believe most players wouldn’t even have fallen to the ground in attempt to make it look at lot worse, but that’s a cultural thing. The Montenegrin player simply gets up and continues playing the rest of the game so how hard was it really! There’s been tackles in the past where players have had legs broken and the offender receives less than a three game ban. Obviously the acting from the player made the incident look worse to the referee. To suspend a player for possibility the entire length of a once in 4 years tournament is outrageous. Correct in saying 1 or 2 games at most, the trouble is here for the world of football who will miss out on seeing one of the world’s best in actions is that if the FA do appeal this I believe the ban will be extended to 4 games simply because the FA are the FA and the spite involved.By Ryan C (18 months ago)
  • The action was petulent rather than violent and has totally been blown out of proportion and as usual England have been made scapegoats by UEFA. If the offender had been Spanish,Dutch or French we would be looking at a 1 match ban and nothing more said. Well done to the FA for standing up to bully boy tactics!! By Nathan (18 months ago)
  • I would not usually commnet on subjects like this but when a national team member acts in such an unprofessional way and as a role model for many children at grassroots, who for a week after the event copied the actions before being put right. So a one match ban would not have been appropriate for such a serious professional foul at his levelBy Mark Russell (18 months ago)
