Rooney and Defoe ready for Saturday after finding scoring touch.

England strike pair Jermain Defoe and Wayne Rooney both scored on South African soil in Monday's training ground victory over Platinum Stars and have now targeted the weekend's World Cup opener against USA.

Defoe got the opening goal, before Rooney wrapped things up to complete a 3-0 win for Fabio Capello's side in their final warm-up match against the South African Premier League outfit.

And Defoe believes England can take a lot of encouragement from their victory and feels they will be at their best when they face the Americans on Saturday.

Capello opted to use 21 players in the exercise and would have taken a lot of encouragement from the performance, whilst Defoe admits the squad are still coming to terms with the conditions in South Africa but will be fully prepared for the vital first game.

"It's always important to win games and we're doing that," said Defoe.

"It was better in the second half. In the first half, it was quite hard to breathe more than anything, but it was a good workout.

"If you look at the friendlies involving all the other teams in the World Cup of late, I don't think you'll have seen many goals at all - it's up to all of us to just keep winning and hope we get it right when it matters - at the World Cup."

Defoe was thrilled to be among the goals once again, but is still unsure whether he will be in the starting line-up for the USA game.

"I have no idea if I've done enough to get a start, who knows what the Manager thinks, but I'm happy to have got a goal," he added.

Rooney is equally fired up for Saturday too after scoring the final goal of the game to end a fine move started by Stephen Warnock and ended by James Milner's cross before the Manchester United hitman applied the finishing touch.

The 24-year-old is now raring to go and feeling sharp with just five days remaining before England travel to Rustenburg for their clash with Bob Bradley's men.

"We're now feeling ready for the big one on Saturday," he said. "The preparations are done and I can't wait for the tournament to start now.

"It was good to get 45 minutes under my belt and it was a good run out. I would have liked to have got a bit more time, but I'm feeling good."
