The Moses Mabhida Stadium was built specifically for the World Cup and cost R3.1 billion.
The 70,000-seater venue will host one of the tournament’s two semi-finals and has been designed as a multi-purpose venue and an amphitheatre complete with a cable car which ascends to a viewing platform at the top of the expansive 350m arch, 106m above the pitch.
The design of the stadium takes its inspiration from the South African flag, with its grand arch representing the nation’s unity. The two legs on the southern side of the arch come together to form one leg on the northern side of the stadium, symbolising the new unity of a once-divided country.
