Route to the finals
Despite picking up just four points in their opening four matches in South America zone qualifying, Chile went on to finish in second place in the group, one point behind winners Brazil.

During qualification they registered ten victories, three draws and five losses – the ten triumphs being more than they had managed in their previous two campaigns combined – and finish on 33 points.

The tally included impressive wins over Argentina and a double victory over Columbia, the second of which was a convincing 4-2 result in Medellin and guaranteed the country’s first appearance in the finals since 1998.

Manager
Argentine tactician Marcelo Bielsa has performed an impressive turnaround for the Chilean national side.

Having failed to qualify for the previous two World Cups, Bielsa has taken La Roja to within one point of topping the South America qualifying zone and seen them win more games (ten) than any other South American rivals during the campaign.

Bielsa was at the helm of Argentina during the 2002 World Cup, where they were dumped out of the competition at the Group Stage.

The 54-year-old’s reputation took something of a knock because of that but he will hope to redeem himself with Chile this summer.

Player watch
Zaragoza frontman Humberto Suazo played in every Qualifer for Chile during their 2010 campaign, bagging ten goals and making himself the top scorer in the South America zone.

The 29-year-old’s contribution provided almost a third of Chile’s 32 goals scored during qualifying and it is in attack that La Roja’s major threat lies.

Attacking midfielder Matias Fernandez and forward Alexis Sanchez notched four and three goals respectively during qualification and will provide potent options upfront.
