Wayne Rooney picks up another award and reveals his management ambitions.

Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney picked up the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award last night (Thursday) and revealed that he would relish the opportunity to go into management after he has finished playing.

“I would like to be a manager, of course. Football is my life. I joined Everton when I was nine and it’s a massive part of who I am.

“I have started doing my coaching badges this year. I love football, I enjoy it. I can’t see myself running a manager,” said Rooney.

Leading from bench instead of from the frontline, however, is still a long way off for the 24-year-old and United and England fans will hope to witnees many more prolific seasons like the one just gone.

“I am only 24, so I have plenty of years playing ahead of me, but one day I would like to become a manager.

“I started doing my coaching badges this year and probably did not do as many classes as I would have liked. Hopefully I can continue them next year.”

The domestic season draws to a close with The FA Cup Final tomorrow and Rooney’s attention is now very much focussed on the World Cup in South Africa.

"There’s a week’s break now before we meet with England and I am looking forward to the biggest tournament in the world and I cannot wait for that first game," he said.

“The expectation is for other people to talk about and think about. For me, I am just looking to get myself right, to get to the World Cup and do my best, and with a bit of luck, hopefully we can be successful."
