The Aston Villa schemer featured in three games during 2009 and completed the year with a mixed bag of results having tasted victory, a draw and a defeat.

Young’s impressive form in the Premier League ensured he was a regular in Fabio Capello’s squads through the year, but his opportunities in the team were largely limited to the substitute’s bench.

His first involvement came in the 6-0 victory over Andorra at Wembley in June, when he was introduced as a half time substitute in place of Wayne Rooney and helped England score three second half goals to complete their rout.

He was then given a starting berth in August when the Three Lions faced a friendly game against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Young played for 68 minutes in that game before making way for his Aston Villa team-mate James Milner as England came back from two goals down to salvage a draw.

Young’s third appearance of the year came in the final match of 2009, when he came on in the second half of the game with Brazil in Doha. Unfortunately, that game ended in defeat for Young and his team-mates, so he will be looking to improve on that in 2010,
