With a goalscoring ratio better than one-in-two, Frank Lampard enjoyed a fruitful 2009 and he also wrote himself into the history books by scoring England’s 500th goal at Wembley Stadium.

That goal came against Slovakia in March as the Chelsea man finished confidently on 82 minutes after being found by Michael Carrick. Lampard then proceeded to set up Wayne Rooney to slot home England’s 501st Wembley goal – and their fourth on the night.

These were two notable moments in a terrific year for Lampard who, with six goals, was his country’s joint-top leading goalscorer, alongside Rooney.

Wembley landmarks aside, Lampard’s most telling contribution came against Croatia in September when his double helped England to a 5-1 victory to confirm their place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. His first came from 12 yards after Aaron Lennon was felled inside the box and Lampard dispatched his second penalty inside four days following his spot-kick against Slovenia. He grabbed his second, and England’s third, just before the hour mark, nodding home a cross from Glen Johnson.

Three of Lampard’s six England goals came from the penalty spot with his first spot-kick coming against Kazakhstan in June. Four days later Lampard was on target again, side-footing home a Theo Walcott pull-back to put the Three Lions 2-0 up against Andorra.

Lampard missed just one game in 2009 as a thigh injury ruled him out of the friendly against Brazil in November but he and Johnson each made the most England appearances in the last calendar year.
