Jermaine Jenas already has a place in the history books having scored the very first goal of Fabio Capello's reign, opening the scoring after fine work from Joe Cole against Switzerland.
The Tottenham midfielder played twice more in 2008, most notably against Croatia where he created England's third goal for Wayne Rooney.
But Jenas would appear just once in 2009 as competition for midfield places increased, but his one cap came from the start against no less an opposition than Brazil.
Appearing alongside Gareth Barry, just as he had done at the start of Capello's career with England, Jenas faced the unenviable task of stopping the likes of Kaka and Elano.
England, captained for the first time by Wayne Rooney, held their own in the first half but were caught by a sucker punch two minutes after the interval as Nilmar scored a fine header.
Despite missing several senior players, Fabio Capello's men showed moments to savour but they were not enough to salvage a draw in the final game of the year.
In a promising sign for Harry Redknapp's North London outfit, Jenas was joined on the field by Tottenham teammates Tom Huddlestone, making his debut, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe for the final quarter of the game.
The quest for Jenas will now be to do everything he can to be involved in his second World Cup.
