Emile Heskey began the year by switching clubs as he departed Wigan Athletic to join Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa.
Then at the start of February, Heskey was leading the line alongside his new club colleague Gabriel Agbonlahor against European Champions in Spain.
Despite suffering their first defeat in almost 12 months, England showed flashes of their ability in Seville, and Heskey was at the heart of much of their forward play.
Indeed, the powerful striker could have changed the course of the match with the scores level as he went clear on goal only to be chopped down by Gerard Pique. A debatable offside flag saved the Barcelona defender from a certain red card.
England's second game of the year was a mixed blessing for Heskey, as the Villa hitman bagged his first goal under Fabio Capello only to suffer an injury in the course of putting the ball in the net.
Heskey would miss England's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine four days later as a result, but would return away in Kazakhstan to strike his second in as many games in a 4-0 romp.
A yellow card picked up in Zagreb was still hanging over Heskey, and for that reason he was not selected against Andorra in the final game of the season as another caution would have deprived England of their number nine against Croatia at Wembley.
Heskey played in friendlies with Holland and Slovenia before leading the line in the emphatic 5-1 win over Slaven Bilic's side that clinched qualification for South Africa.
His final appearance of the year came in Dnipro as England suffered their only defeat of the World Cup qualification campaign to Ukraine. Playing as a lone striker following the dismissal of Rob Green ensured it was a difficult evening for Heskey.
