Steven Gerrard’s England highlight of 2009 came in September when his brace helped Fabio Capello’s side to a 5-1 win over Croatia, a win which sealed World Cup qualification.
Frank Lampard opened the scoring from the penalty spot after just seven minutes to calm English nerves and Gerrard doubled this advantage soon after. Aaron Lennon delivered a teasing 18th-minute cross which the Liverpool skipper headed beyond Vedran Runje, accelerating English dreams of a South African adventure in 2010.
Lampard knocked in his second of the night just before the hour mark and Gerrard followed suit on 66 minutes, nodding home a delicate, chipped cross from Wayne Rooney.
In Gerrard’s other six caps of 2009, he claimed four assists. He crossed for Emile Heskey to bundle home the opening goal against Slovakia in a March friendly and two more Gerrard crosses provided two of England’s four goals against Kazakhstan in June. His left-foot cross was turned home by Gareth Barry to give England the lead before Alexandr Mokin failed to deal with Gerrard’s cross-cum-shot allowing Heskey to pounce. Arguably, his most crucial assist came against Ukraine in April when his knock-down from a David Beckham corner was converted by John Terry to give England a late winner.
Injury curtailed Gerrard’s year with both England and Liverpool, but there is no doubting his contribution for both club and country when he is fit and available; for England in 2009 his stats read: seven caps, two goals and four assists.
