The Manchestter United goalkeeper had one England cap coming into 2009, but he won that almost two years earlier in a friendly against Spain at Old Trafford.

He was handed his second appearance, and his first under Fabio Capello, as a half-time substitute as England were leading 1-0 against Slovakia in March. He was largely untroubled in a 4-0 friendly victory at Wembley.

Foster's next outing was in October in the World Cup Qualifier at Wembley against Belarus. It was his first start and with England leading 1-0 thanks to Peter Crouch's fourth minute goal, the 26-year-old made a save from Sergei Omelianchuk's 25-yard effort to keep the Three Lions in front.

He foiled the same man midway through the second half when England were 2-0 up and was able to see out his first full game for Capello's men with a clean sheet, as they ran out 3-0 winners.

He conceded just one goal in his three appearances during the year, and it came in the November friendly against Brazil, but he did make three significant saves from Thiago, Kaka and Dani Alves.
