Shearer and Sheringham helped England defeat Georgia on this day.

England’s very own ‘SAS’ came to the rescue in a World Cup Qualifier against Georgia on this day in 1997.

Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer were both on target in front of a full-house at Wembley as the Three Lions claimed three vital points in their quest for qualification to France ’98. It was the first time the two had played up-front together since Euro ’96, where they had proved such a potent attacking threat.

Shearer, winning his 32nd cap, was leading his country for the fourth time, having been given the armband by Glenn Hoddle after the previous summer’s tournament. And the burly forward appeared to revel in the added responsibility.

After setting up Sheringham with a volleyed cross from the left for the opening goal (see the video on the right-hand side), he then smashed home a close range indirect free-kick after the Georgians momentarily forgot the back-pass rule.

Sheringham’s headed effort was the seventh of his England career, while Shearer’s last minute strike saw him reach 14 and post the 2-0 victory.

Also lining up for the Three Lions that Wednesday evening were: David Seaman, Gary Neville, Sol Campbell, David Batty, Tony Adams Graeme le Saux, David Beckham, Paul Ince and Rob Lee.
