Bobby Charlton scored his 49th and final England goal on this day.

Bobby Charlton, knighted in 1994, is still England’s most lethal marksman. He scored 49 goals in 106 internationals and the last of those, in a pre-World Cup friendly against Colombia in Bogota, came on this day 40 years ago.

Sir Bobby made a scoring debut against Scotland at Hampden when he was 20 and the Manchester United star became famous for his incredible shooting – with either foot and from any range. He scored in 13 successive seasons and in 27 different England matches.

His thundering 30-yarder against Mexico was England’s first of the 1966 World Cup and set them on their way after a frustrating 0-0 draw with Uruguay.

He fired both of England’s goals in the Portugal semi-final and he has winners’ medals for the World Cup, the European Cup, The FA Cup and three League Championships.

He was made England captain for his 100th international, against the Irish at Wembley. In his next, played thousands of miles away in Colombia, he scored his 49th and last goal for his country.

It was the third in a 4-0 England victory at altitude, a right-foot rocket from the edge of the box that left ‘keeper Quintana helpless. A typical Charlton effort.
