England played Scotland for the second time in four months on this day.

England played Scotland at Wembley on this day in 1973 and unusually it was their second meeting of that year.

The Scots were our oldest opponents, the first international between us having taken place more than a century earlier, but until then we had only clashed once a year.

The reason for the anomaly was that the Scottish FA was celebrating its Centenary in ’73 and there was a special match to mark the occasion at Hampden Park on 14 February. Bobby Moore won his 100th cap and Sir Alf Ramsey’s England really went to town on a snow-covered pitch.

It took the visitors just six minutes to take the lead, Peter Lorimer glancing Leeds club-mate Allan Clarke’s cross into the net for an unlucky own goal. England were 3-0 up in 15 minutes after Clarke and Mick Channon had scored and further strikes by Martin Chivers and Clarke again made it 5-0 at the end.

A little over three months later the embarrassed Scots had their chance of revenge at Wembley in a Home International Championship fixture.

This time England won a very physical encounter 1-0, Martin Peters heading home from Alan Ball’s free-kick ten minutes into the second half. A crowd of just under 96,000 saw England clinch the Championship for the 29th time.
