  • England v Trinidad & Tobago 2006

Liverpool lads send England into knock-out stage in 2006.

England met Trinidad & Tobago for the first time in a Group B fixture during the World Cup on this day four years ago.

Goals in the last seven minutes from Liverpool duo Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard in Nuremberg’s Frankenstadion secured three more points and a place in the last 16 even though England had only played two matches.

Before those late goals it had looked as though Wayne Rooney’s long-awaited return from injury – as a 58th-minute substitute for Michael Owen – would remain the high point of the match.

Frank Lampard alone had several opportunities to add to his England tally (of eleven) but the ball seemed determined not to go in for the Three Lions.

A 48,000 crowd in the stadium and 17 million glued to the TV at home must have been collectively checking their watches as the score remained at  0-0 until the 83rd minute.

Then Crouch scored with a towering header from David Beckham’s inch-perfect cross from the right and Gerrard bent a left-footer into the far corner for 2-0 a minute into stoppage time.

England had won their first two World Cup Finals matches for the first time for 24 years. They had kept two clean sheets too.
