Scottish fans snapped a Wembley crossbar on this day.

England’s 2-1 defeat to Scotland on this day in 1977 tends to be remembered for the post-match antics of some very exuberant Scottish fans.

They celebrated their Wembley victory by digging up little bits of the pitch and snapping one of the crossbars.

As for the contest itself, the two teams were well-matched for most of the first half. After 40 minutes of entertaining cut and thrust the Scots scored.

Hartford’s free-kick on the left, controversially awarded for handball by the Hungarian referee, found McQueen’s head and the ball flashed past Ray Clemence.

The Scots fought hard to protect their narrow lead and then made it 2-0 on the hour. Rioch headed Johnston’s deep cross back across goal and a clutch of players lunged at the ball near the line. Dalglish got the decisive touch and forced it in at the second attempt.

England tried to get back into the match but found the Scottish defence, particularly McGrain and McQueen, an impenetrable barrier.

They finally broke through on 87 minutes, Mick Channon netting with a penalty after a foul on Trevor Francis. But Scotland were worthy winners and a few of their ‘Tartan Army’ lost their heads at the end.
