Capello reports on Barry and Ferdinand following first training session.
Fabio Capello has been given an injury boost by Gareth Barry's return to training but is waiting on the results of a scan on captain Rio Ferdinand's knee.
Manchester City midfielder Barry has been out with an ankle injury since 5 May but took part in training with the rest of the squad in Rustenburg this morning.
Ferdinand has gone to hospital for a scan on his knee following a challenge at the end of the training session, with Capello unsure of the extent of the injury.
Capello said: "Barry has started training with the team today and he is improving every day.
"He is getting better and better and will train again this afternoon. We know we have to be careful with him.
"Other bad news is that Rio hurt his knee in the last moment of training in a tackle. He has gone to the hospital for a scan and we hope he will be ok."
The countdown to England's first game, against the USA in Rustenburg on 12 June, is well underway after the 23-man squad landed in South Africa yesterday.
"After seven months since our last qualifier I'm happy to be here," Capello added. "I'm excited that finally we have arrived here in South Africa and we are focussed on the games we have coming up."
Capello received a good luck phone call from Prime Minister David Cameron and has also taken the injured David Beckham to the tournament as part of his team.
He added: "I spoke to the Primer Minster and he wished the team good luck.
"David Beckham is a symbol of England and he can help the players by talking to them - and also help us. He is an important part of my team."
