  • Italy v France

Italy and France face extra-time in the World Cup Final.

It’s the last thing you want as a player. Your legs feel like lead, the pressure is unbearable and you know that one mistake could see your country crash out of the World Cup. It is, of course, extra-time.

A total of 51 World Cup finals matches have gone to extra-time, the first being the Preliminary Round tie between Austria and France in 1934, and the most recent being the 2006 Final between Italy and France – which was finally decided by penalties.

In total, five Finals have gone to extra-time, two of which went to the dreaded spot-kicks.
