Norman Whiteside steals a record from the great Pele.

When Norman Whiteside appeared for Northern Ireland against Yugoslavia at the 1982 World Cup, not only was he making his international debut but – at 17 years and 41 days – he also surpassed Pele’s record as the youngest player in the tournament’s history.

It was an impressive start to an international career that would eventually be curtailed by injury after 38 caps but in those early appearances Whiteside truly made his mark.

He played in all of Northern Ireland’s ’82 World Cup games – including the historic 1-0 victory over hosts Spain – as his side reached the Second Round of the competition.

At the ’86 tournament in Mexico he bagged his only World Cup goal, scoring in the 1-1 draw with Algeria.

His record as the youngest player to appear in a World Cup still stands.
